After raising a family and sending her children into the adult world, a mother often turns her sights to a new kind of quiet – a calm household, a vacation without kids, or some home improvement once the traffic is out of the house. Not so for Denise Relford-Crawford. After raising four children as a single mother, often working two jobs to make ends meet, Denise decided to continue to do whaat she does best – raise children.

A Room With a View… and a Big Heart
On May 6, 1988 Sue and Jerry Hughes sat inside the living room of a large brick home. Overflowing with nervous excitement, they held their baby girl in their arms for the first time. “She was 12 days old… we just couldn’t stop looking at her“ says Sue. Multiply a powerful memory like this by thousands and you have some idea of the emotion and significance a single room can hold—in this case, the living room of the Nebraska Children’s Home Society’s original location on Fontenelle Boulevard. But while many were lamenting holiday plans gone awry, one Omaha couple was about to experience a true Christmas miracle…
