    Community & Neighborhood Based Service offer classes for parents:

    Ready, Set…Deliver

    Ready, Set…Deliver is a single session class taught by a licensed nurse that teaches how to have a healthy pregnancy.  Learn about the importance of healthy behaviors to support both you and your growing baby.  Topics range from prenatal care to preterm delivery and care after the birth of your baby.  The pregnant teen can also include the father or other delivery support person, but that is not necessary for participation.     Lights, Camera, Contraction is a hands-on, single session labor class taught by a licensed nurse that teaches you how to prepare for the labor and delivery process.  It includes information on:

    • recognizing labor symptoms,

    Baby Talk classes teach skills of newborn care and perinatal maternal health including a focus on maternal depression, breastfeeding, nurturing, safe sleep and car seat safety.  It includes information on:

    • illness
    • car seat safety
    • and more

    Toddler Talk

    Toddler Talk provides the next offering in the sequence to help teen moms master the shift from parenting an infant to parenting a toddler. Class content focuses on teaching skills for positive interaction, strategies for preventing negative behavior, alternatives to physical discipline, toilet training, safety, sleep, and the importance of routine and play at this stage of a child’s development.     Happy MomParents Supporting Parents offers an informal setting for teen moms to share questions and concerns with one another while receiving support and guidance from a doctoral-level African American child development professional who is also a mother and grandmother.     Teen Chat

    Teens ResearchingTeen Chat program develops self-empowerment skills, pro-social relationship skills, positive self-image as young women, and provides a framework for personal goal-setting. Our objectives include increasing understanding of the importance of positive decision-making, knowing how to access formal support systems in their communities, developing at least 2 long-term personal goals and understanding the effects and consequences sexual activity can have on goal achievement, increasing knowledge of human sexuality and sexual development, discussing information about HIV/AIDS and preventative methods including abstinence and condom use, and identifying a mutual support network to support healthy behaviors.
